What an insurance condition survey covers

The checklist is built around what your insurer needs to see to place or renew cover, rather than just a general condition opinion.

  • Hull & structural condition — corrosion, delamination, osmosis and construction-specific checks.
  • Machinery & systems — engine, steering, bilge and electrical system condition.
  • Safety & compliance equipment — checked against what the vessel's intended use requires.
  • Electrical & rigging — wiring condition, and standing/running rigging where applicable.
  • Documentation review — registration, survey history and any prior incident reports sighted where available.

Insurance survey FAQs

Common questions from owners and brokers

How often do insurers require a survey?

It depends on the insurer and the vessel's age, but it's common for underwriters to ask for a condition survey when a policy is first placed, and again periodically after that — often every few years, or when a vessel reaches a certain age. Your broker or insurer will tell you when one's due; we're happy to confirm the right scope once you know.

Will my insurer accept a report from TK Marine?

TK Marine Consultants is an AMSA-accredited, AIMS certified commercial marine surveying company operating under an ISO 9001 quality system, and our reports are accepted by Australia's major marine insurers. If your insurer has a specific report format or checklist, let us know when you book and we'll work to it.

What format does the report come in?

A written electronic report, delivered by email, covering the areas inspected, condition observed and any recommendations — in a format suited to passing straight to your broker or underwriter.

Can one survey satisfy more than one insurer?

Often, yes — a thorough condition survey report can usually be provided to more than one insurer for consideration. Confirm with your broker whether your specific insurer has any additional requirements before you book.

Does this cover commercial vessels as well as recreational boats?

Yes. Insurance surveys are carried out on both — for commercial vessels, pricing follows the per-metre commercial vessel pricing guide rather than the recreational table above.

Need an insurance survey arranged?

Tell us the vessel, your insurer and the timeframe, and we'll confirm scope and price.
